Ignore ‘loose talk’ against Akufo-Addo incorruptibility claim – Agyarko defends

The Policy Advisor to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer says those challenging his boss’ claim of incorruptibility must do so only with indisputable evidence.
Boakye Agyarko says Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent pronouncement that he cannot be corrupted should not be disputed because the NPP flagbearer has a proven track record in his many years of public service.
“Nana Akufo-Addo has been in public service and public life for over 40 years. He served in Government for eight years, nothing untoward has been linked to his name,” Mr Agyarko defended the 2016 Presidential candidate on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Tuesday.
The Policy Advisor was reacting to criticisms that Nana Akufo-Addo’s claim of incorruptibility was far-fetched since he could be compromised after he becomes President.

Nana Akufo-Addo
Some critics have also said if Nana Akufo-Addo is incorruptible as he claims to be he would have prosecuted public officials found to have abused their offices while he was Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under President John Kufuor’s government.
Among many other things, Nana Akufo-Addo had said “I am not into politics to take bribes or be corrupt. I did not come into politics to line my pockets with the money of poor Ghanaians. That is not why I am into politics.”
He was addressing thousands of residents at Ekon, a fishing community in the Cape Coast South constituency of the Central region as part of his 2016 electioneering campaign activities.
Executive Director of Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Linda Ofori-Kwafo, has said claims of incorruptibility are implausible since it is in the human nature to be corrupt under a given set of circumstances.

Mrs Ofori-Kwafo

Mrs Ofori-Kwafo said these to suggest that claims such as that made by Akufo-Addo on political platforms must be taken with a pinch of salt.
But Mr Agyarko says the GII Executive Director’s pronouncements lack logic.
“I am surprised that the head of such an organisation would make such a loose statement, I am surprised. You are making hypothetical statements and trying to draw personal conclusions. Nana Akufo-Addo is saying he will not," he said.
"He believes he has sufficient discipline; he believes the motive for him does not arise, and he can make that promise. People can be disciplined in spite of human failings. People can say that this is the human condition but by His grace, I will not be corrupt,” he added.

According to Mr Agyarko, comments such as Mrs Ofori-Kwafo’s constitute drawing an erroneous conclusion from a hypothetical position.
Should Nana Akufo-Addo win the November 7 elections, Mr Agyarko outlines, the new administration would put in place strong institutions to tackle corruption.

He said the first key approach to fighting corruption would be the selection of people who are positioned to be disciplined in the face of all odds.

“We have made a promise since 2012 that we will establish a separate office of an independent prosecutor to handle corruption and separate that function from the Attorney General’s office,” he said.
He also says anti-graft state agencies such as Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) will be adequately funded to battle the surge of corruption.

Ghana is currently ranked the 7th African country in the latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI) by an anti-corruption body, Transparency International.

According to a statement from GII, the local chapter of Transparency International (TI), “The CPI 2015 scored Ghana 47 out of a score of 100 and ranked the country 56 out of 168 countries.”
